A Day in the Life: Become an Alpaca Farmer

Our Farmer for a Day experience pulls back the curtain on the world of camelid care. This isn’t just a stroll in the park—it’s an immersive, hands-on dive into the rewarding (and sometimes messy!) life of an alpaca farmer.

What Does a Typical Day Look Like?

Being an alpaca farmer is about more than just petting soft fleece. You’ll be working alongside our team to ensure our herd is happy, healthy, and hydrated. Here are the types of jobs you’ll tackle:

  • The Morning Buffet: Start the day by prepping and distributing specialised supplemental grain and fresh hay. You’ll learn which alpacas are the "foodies" and which ones need a little extra encouragement.
  • Husbandry & Health Checks: Get up close and personal. You’ll help perform basic wellness checks, looking at eye health, fleece condition, and even learning how to check their "body condition score."
  • The "Paddock Polish": Let's be real—farming involves chores! You’ll help with "poop picking" to keep the pastures clean and prevent parasites. It’s the most authentic part of the job!
  • Halter Training: Help us work with our younger alpacas (cria) or our trekking boys to get them comfortable with leading and human interaction.
  • Fibre Education: Find out lots of information about the qualities of alpaca fleece and its uses.

We believe in keeping our groups small, so you get quality time with the animals. Whether you’re looking for a serious career change or just a unique farmers experience, here is what you need to know:

 

Half-Day

Approximately 3 hours

  • Group Size Usually limited to 2–4 people for a truly "hands-on" feel.
  • What's Included Safety briefing, all equipment, farm lunch or refreshments, and plenty of "alpaca selfies."

Full-Day Intensive

Approximately 6 hours

  • Group Size Usually limited to 2–4 people for a truly "hands-on" feel.
  • What's Included Safety briefing, all equipment, farm lunch or refreshments, and plenty of "alpaca selfies."

Is This Right for You? (Recommended Age)

While we love visitors of all ages, the Farmer for a Day experience is a bit more demanding than a standard “Meet & Greet.”

Recommended Age: 10+ years old.

Why? The day involves being inside the paddocks with large (though gentle) animals, using farm tools, and staying focused for several hours.

Farmer's Tip: "Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty and sturdy, closed-toe boots. Alpacas are curious, and they will sniff your pockets for treats!"
